How to Safely Experiment with Slider Revolution

How to Safely Experiment with Slider Revolution

Learn how to setup an offline WordPress site where you can perfect your designs without affecting your live site.

Editing Modules Freely

If you have a module running on a live site, you may want to modify it without your entire design process being visible on the front end.

The best way to do this is to setup an offline WordPress Site, (also known as a local, staging or development site), and freely edit your work there. You can design in private, and take your changes online only when you’re ready.

In this tutorial we’ll see how to setup an offline WordPress site, and transfer your modules back & forth between it and your live site.

Setup an Offline WordPress Site

Step 1: Create an offline WordPress site.

The easiest way to setup an offline WordPress site is with the free software “Local”. Click here -> to download Local and follow the install instructions for your operating system.

Once Local is installed and running, click the large + button in its bottom left corner 1 and follow the prompts to create a site.

Alternatively, you can see if your host offers a staging environment. A staging environment is a duplicate of your site that, while still online, is private. As such it’s much the same as using an offline site.

Every Slider Revolution license key can be used on one offline or staging site, so you can always have a private design environment.

Step 2: Install Slider Revolution offline.

Once your offline site is ready, install and unlock Slider Revolution in the same way you did for your online site ->.

Note that if you are using a staging environment, Slider Revolution may already be installed.

Export Your Module

Step 1: In your online site, go to your Plugin Dashboard ->.

Step 2: In the Modules Section 1, locate the module you want to export, and expand the quick access buttons 2.

Step 3: Click the Export button 1, then save the exported zip file Slider Revolution creates for you.

Import & Edit Offline

Step 1: Go to your offline site, and to its Plugin Dashboard.

Step 2: In the Overview Bar -> click the Import button 1, then in the import window that opens, select the zip you just exported.

Step 3: When the import is complete you will see a notice that it has been successful. Close the import window.

Step 4: After import, edit your module freely.

The module will appear in the Modules Area. It will be an exact duplicate, with the same name as the original.

You can now edit it as you please, experiment with anything you like, and perfect your design.

Re-Import Your Module

Step 1: In your offline site, export your finished module using the same export process as you did earlier.

Step 2: Return to your online site, and import your module.

Note that your original module will not be overwritten. The module you import now will appear as a second, separate module.

Step 3: Update your module embed(s).

Go to the page, or pages, where your original module was embedded and update their Slider Revolution blocks or shortcodes to show the newly imported module.

Step 4 (optional): Once you are certain you are happy with your newly exported module, you may wish to delete the original version, so you only have a single version on your live site.

For extra safety, keep copies of your exported module versions so you can go back to them if you need to.

Repeat As Required

If you need to make more edits in the future, just repeat the above process as required.

With this method, you can edit your designs in the safety of an offline environment at any time.
