Layers Sidebar

Layers Sidebar

The Layers Sidebar lists every layer in the current slide, with tools to search, filter, sort and switch scenes, and row controls to reorder, rename, hide, lock and delete layers.

Layers Sidebar

Go to the Module Editor, and in the Top Bar click Layers to open the Layers Sidebar, then:

  • List Tools Section
    • Search
    • Filter
    • Sort
    • Scene
  • Layer List Section
    • Layers
    • Selecting Layers
    • Reordering Layers
    • Renaming a Layer
    • Containers
    • Invisible Layers
    • Delete
    • Hide in Editor
    • Lock in Editor
    • Edit Static Layers
    • Bulk Style Editor
  • Keyboard Shortcuts

The Layers Sidebar is accessed by going to the Module Editor, then the Top Bar, then clicking the Layers button 1.

In the Layers Sidebar you see every layer on the current slide as a list, in depth order, and use it to select, rename, reorder, hide, lock and delete layers, to open and close containers, and to reach the Static Slide's layers and the Bulk Style Editor. It is the place to find a layer that is hard to click on the stage, and to see at a glance why a layer is not editable.

List Tools Section

The row above the list narrows and orders what it shows, and chooses the scene being edited.

Filters the list to layers whose names contain the typed text, once three or more characters have been entered. Clear the field to show every layer again.

Filter (Dropdown)

Limits the list to one kind of layer.

Options:

  • All Elements: Shows every layer on the slide.
  • Editable: Shows only the layers that can be edited in the current scene and state.
  • Texts: Shows text layers only.
  • Buttons: Shows button layers only.
  • Icons: Shows icon layers only.
  • Shapes: Shows shape layers only.
  • Containers: Shows group and row layers only.
  • Images: Shows image layers only.
  • Videos: Shows video layers only.
  • Audios: Shows audio layers only.

Sort (Dropdown)

Sets the order of the list.

Options:

  • Alias: Sorts the layers by name.
  • Depth: Lists the layers in stacking order, the topmost layer first, which is the order the layers sit in on the stage.
  • Type: Groups the layers by their type.

Scene (Dropdown)

Chooses the scene the editor is working in, which decides which layers are editable and which show as invisible in the list. It is the same choice as the Scene Switcher in the Timeline.

Options:

  • In Animation: The default scene in which layers animate in.
  • Out Animation: The default scene in which layers animate out, played from the last scene.

Layer List Section

The list itself, one row per layer.

Layers

Each row shows an icon for the layer's type and the layer's name. The selected layer is highlighted, and layers inside a group or a column are indented beneath it. The Slide Background is listed last, since it sits beneath everything else.

Selecting Layers

Click a row to select that layer on the Stage and open its settings in the Design Mode sidebar. Hold SHIFT and click further rows to add them to the selection, or to remove one already selected. A multiple selection is edited as one, as it is when selecting layers on the stage.

Reordering Layers

Drag a row up or down to change the layer's depth, so it sits above or below its neighbours on the stage. Drop a row onto a group or a column to move the layer inside it, or drag it out again to remove it.

Renaming a Layer

Double click a layer's name to edit it in place, then press Enter or click away to keep the new name. A layer with no name of its own is listed as Layer.

Containers

A group, row or column shows its child layers indented beneath it. Click the container's icon to fold its children away or show them again. The fold changes only the list, not the stage.

Invisible Layers

A layer that cannot be edited in the current scene, device or state is dimmed and carries an Invisible label. Click the label to see every reason, which can be that the layer is not in this scene, or is hidden by its device visibility, animation visibility, editor visibility or style settings, and a reason marked Parent belongs to the container the layer sits in. Clicking the label also adds the layer to the current scene where that is the cause.

Delete (Button)

Removes the layer from the slide. Shown on hover. The Slide Background has no delete button, since a slide always has one.

Hide in Editor (Toggle Button)

Hides the layer on the stage while editing, so that layers beneath it can be worked on. It does not affect the published module. Shown on hover, and kept in view while the layer is hidden.

Options:

  • On: The layer is hidden on the stage.
  • Off: The layer is shown on the stage.

Lock in Editor (Toggle Button)

Locks the layer so that it cannot be selected or moved on the stage, which keeps a finished layer out of the way. It does not affect the published module. Shown on hover, and kept in view while the layer is locked.

Options:

  • On: The layer cannot be selected or moved on the stage.
  • Off: The layer is selectable and movable.

Edit Static Layers (Button)

  • Visible when the Static Slide's Visibility in Editor is toggled to On and the Static Slide holds at least one layer, while any slide other than the Static Slide is being edited.
  • Hidden when Visibility in Editor is toggled to Off, the Static Slide has no layers, or the Static Slide itself is being edited.

Switches the editor to the Static Slide, whose layers are shown on every slide, and lists its layers in their place. Shown as the last row of the list.

Bulk Style Editor (Button)

Opens the Bulk Style Editor, where one style change is applied to many layers at once. The button sits at the foot of the sidebar beneath the list.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Three keyboard actions apply while the pointer is over the list.

  • Double click on a layer's name: Renames it in place, as listed under Slides & Lists in the Shortcuts panel.
  • SHIFT + click: Adds a layer to the selection or removes it.
  • DELETE or BACKSPACE: Deletes the selected layers.
